 | Residents Spotlight Brevard County volunteers received second-place honors during the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) annual awards ceremony, which celebrated the contributions of more than 450 statewide volunteers.
The award was based on the percentage of Medicare beneficiaries served by volunteers in counties with populations between 250,000 to 999,999 people. The SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and is operated throughout the state in partnership with the Area Agencies on Aging. The program provides free and unbiased education and counseling for Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers. Trained SHINE volunteers help elders understand and receive the health insurance coverage they need through Medicare, Medicaid, prescription assistance, Long-Term Care planning and insurance, and other health care issues. If you are interested in volunteering for the SHINE program, please contact Tammy Harris at Brevard County Housing and Human Services Department (321) 633-2007 or tammy.harris@brevardcounty.us or Lynne Meagher, Area Volunteer Coordinator at 321-752-8080. |
